Dear all,
I haven’t written anything for this blog for many months because I have been sidetracked with another project. It’s on the economic history of the United States and has monopolized my attention...
As I have been working on that project, moreover, I have realized that I’d like to blog on subjects beyond Argentina. Therefore, I have decided to turn “The Poor Rich Nation” into “The Poor Rich World.” From now on, it will be a blog that aims to use history to understand global inequality today. The question will be: How did we become such a wealthy planet with so much poverty?
Inevitably, Argentina will feature more frequently than most other countries. I intend to write a post, for example, on Sebastián Mazzuca’s Latecomer State Formation, a book that is really all about Argentina, despite notionally covering the whole of Latin America and comparing it to Europe.
But I will also be writing on other topics. After Mazzuca, there will be a post on the definition of “capitalism.” Specifically, I aim to draw on the ideas of Joseph Schumpeter and Friedrich Hayek to argue that capitalism should be seen as more a consequence than a cause of growth.
As before, you can support me in this endeavour by donating via Paypal:
One or two of you already are contributing, so thank you!
Finally, apologies for not having written anything for so long. My ruminations on the origins of global inequality should be more forthcoming from now on.
Joe
